As many of you would be aware, the government has imposed a ban on all imported raw prawn products. This happened early in January and has sent shockwaves through the food service industry. All imported green prawns went up 30% over night and the stock was unavailable in a matter of days. We have very limited stock available and the reality is, anyone wanting to use green prawns will probably have to buy Aussie prawns at around $50kg. This is going to make it unviable for many. The ban hasn’t affected cooked imported prawns, so we have cooked cutlets and flesh available. Any crumbed, battered and value added products are also still available, so, it might just mean a slightly different prawn offering on your menus. Please give us a call if you would like to discuss options.
The price of squid tubes has more than doubled in the last 6 months. Warmer waters around the world has resulted in catches being down by as much as 60%. Reports I have read suggest that these price levels might be in place until October this year.
Tasmania and South Australia are Australia’s major suppliers of Oysters to the food service industry. Last year, both states were affected by an outbreak of Pacific Oyster Mortality Disease. This has placed severe pressure on the supply of oysters and most of our product is now coming out of New Zealand. This has seen price increases of around 20%.
Scallop prices overseas and domestically are extremely high, and are in fact the highest they have been for 20 years. This will not correct itself for at least another few months which is when the next harvest will be, until then we expect to see supply domestically remain challenging.
In general, 2016 was a very bad year for seafood. While the prawn situation looks bleak for a long time to come, we can only hope that favourable conditions will see a return to more sensible pricing on most other seafood lines, later in the year. Hopefully this has given everyone a little bit of insight as to what is happening with seafood at the moment and if you would like to discuss your requirements, please speak to your representative, or alternatively give us a call.
